Back To School Layout by Mendi

Today I have a school themed layout to share using Lori’s amazingly simple Back To School Layout cutting file. For $.99 this layout has tons of bang for the buck!
I created this as an 8×8 page for my Mother-in-laws mini album so I wanted to keep it simple and this pre-designed layout totally fit the bill! I kept my design pretty close to Lori’s with only a few subtle changes.
Rather than use the bracket shaped frame under my photo, I turned it on it’s side and enlarged it to bleed off the page and ground my title. I then paired some twine with a Button cutting file to accent my photo. I also cut extra circles to go under my numbers to add an extra splash of color. I added a second arrow to indicate my second daughter’s grade and switched out the apple for another cute Apple of Lori’s available in the Silhouette Store HERE.
This page came together quickly and I thought had a lot of style and impact for a small 8×8 page! If you haven’t given Lori’s pre-designed layouts I try before I highly recommended checking them out (You can see all the choices HERE).

Silhouette Tutorial Print & Cut by Mendi

I’m excited to be back today to share a Silhouette video tutorial with all of you!
Today’s card and video shares several little tricks and tips, but my primary focus was to share how to take one of Lori’s many versatile shapes and to personalize it to create your own customized “print & cut” file.  The creative possibilities using this basic idea are endless which is really exciting!
I decided for my card it would be fun to make a chalkboard themed speech bubble to match the feel of Lori’s “Here & Now” collection using one of her everyday shapes, sentiments and digital paper files.
To create my project I used the following cutting files designed by Lori:
Patriotic Icons (Ice Cream Cone)
Heart Flowers (Pom Pom–Silhouette Store Only)

The chalkboard paper I used can be purchased at Jessica Sprague here:

Cascading Album by Traci and a Layout by Mendi

Today we have 2 fabulous projects to share. Traci has created one of the Cascading Albums and Mendi has an adorable layout.
Happy Monday everyone!
I am glad to be back sharing another project with you today!  If you know me, or have ever been to my blog, you know that I’m a huge fan of mini albums.  They are my favorite project and I love the fact that Lori has so many wonderful options in her shop.  So for today’s project, I used one of Lori’s Tiered albums with a bracket edge.  I also used brand new papers and embellishments that Lori designed for Echo Park called Reflections.  Oh my goodness what a fabulous collection!!
For the title of my album, I used Lori’s Family Memories phrase.  This new paper collection is perfect for older family photos or more recent ones — I just love the colors!
I wanted to add a fold-up card piece to one of the album pages, so I cut out Lori’s Hinges to give the card more interest.  Depending on the size you make your hinges, you can add brads to the holes, or use a little bling like I did 🙂
Finally, to add to the vintage feel of my album, I added a fancy frame.  I just love how the frame looks with some gems added for sparkle!
I have posted additional photos of this album over on my blog today, so I hope you’ll stop by and check them out.
Thanks for letting me share with you!!
Traci
Thanks Traci! Here is Mendi’s beautiful layout!
Mendi here today sharing a layout which uses Echo Park’s Here & Now collection (one of my favorite collections of Lori’s) and a number of her fun SVG cutting files.

To form my title block, I layered 5 different cutting files of Lori’s.  I had some old (OLD) Autumn Leaves ticket stamps which I paired with Lori’s ticket shape.  I also mixed things up a bit by removing the shadow from the “Spring Is Here” title and enlarging the word Spring and moving the words to two separate lines to fit on my label.

I created a second grouping to form the second point in my visual triangle using Lori’s layered flower, pennant and a matching sticker from the collection kit.  I added a pearl brad and some foam tape for my flower to add a little interest.

Lori’s tabs with the date was just what I needed to finish my visual triangle (and remind me where to file this one away in the albums when I finally get around to it).  😉

To complete my layout I used the following cutting files designed by Lori:

Blog Party + Vinyl Tutorial + Freebie

It’s Day 3 of our Blog Party! We have another FREEBIE at the end of today’s post so be sure to keep reading…
We have a fantastic vinyl tutorial today by CT member, Mendi. Thank you Mendi for sharing your expertise with all of us!
Here’s what Mendi has to say:
“Today I have an easy step-by-step tutorial sharing how to cut and use vinyl which I used on a simple little card (featuring Lori’s super fun Here & Now collection which she designed for Echo Park).  While vinyl is perfect for so many home decor projects, I  personally adore using it for my cards and scrapbook layouts.  It’s the perfect medium for cutting delicate files that would ordinarily shred cardstock.”

“I started off by planning the basic layout of my card by assembling it visually in my Silhouette software, changing the fill colors to get a feel for what papers I might want to use to cut it out.  I changed a couple things along the way (like my sentiment color since I was sad to discover that my hot pink vinyl was not a good match for my paper).”
“I knew I wanted to cut the teeny-tiny bird legs and beaks out of orange vinyl, but they were all one piece with the branch so to get around that I made a duplicate and used my knife to isolate the birds and cut out part of the branch.  I could have cut it all off, but I decide to leave a portion to help me line up my birds just right during assembly.  The following screen shots show the steps I took to do this, deleting the extras portions I didn’t need.”

“I was now ready to cut my birds from the orange vinyl.  To do this I selected the vinyl cut setting from the menu.  With vinyl you have the option to adhere it to your cutting mat like you would cardstock or to insert it directly into your machine.  Personally I like to use my mat and use up small scraps of vinyl (and not mess with changing settings), but for the purpose of today’s tutorial I thought I would share another option.

When using your vinyl without a mat you need to make sure to uncheck the box next to “cutting mat” within your cutting settings window.”

“If you’re using a Cameo, depending on the width of your vinyl, you will also most likely need to slide the rollers by following the directions on the inside cover of the machine.”

“Also make sure to change your setting from ‘load cutting mat’ to ‘load media’ and hit enter.”

“Change your blade setting to 2 (or in my case I accidentally took a picture of mine set to 3 which also works if your blade is getting dull).”

“After pulling my full-sized vinyl from the machine, I cut around the image to avoid waste and peeled off and threw away the negative portion of the image.”

“I then cut a small piece of transfer paper that was similar in size and peeled it from the glossy paper backing (if you’re thrifty like me, this can be saved and reused though so make sure to keep the backing it comes on to hold onto for another project).”

“Lay the clear transfer paper over your vinyl image (sticky side down) and rub with the popsicle stick it comes with (or bone folder or stylus).”

“Peel back the transfer paper and your image should now be clinging to the clear transfer paper.  If not you can help it along by rubbing stubborn areas again or sticking a fingernail in there to encourage it.”

“Now you are ready to adhere it to your actual project.  Once again your rub-it with your popsicle stick or stylus (and once again you repeat as necessary or stick a fingernail in between the transfer paper and your vinyl cutout to help it along).”

“When images are not fragile or easily warped in their shape it’s possible to skip the transfer paper all together, but I personally love the transfer paper because it helps me line it up perfectly every time just the way it was on my computer screen.” 🙂

“I repeated these same steps to cut out the sentiment “love you” on my card.  With the small size I chose, this was even more fragile than the bird legs and would have been nearly impossible to do with any material other than vinyl.  I completed my card with more cute papers from the Here & Now collection.”

To create my card today I used the following cutting files designed by Lori Whitlock:

“For all those new Silhouette owners out there I hope I’ve taught you something new and for everyone else, I hope I’ve managed to inspire you to play with vinyl more and give it a try for your next intricate cutting project!”

Mini Album by Traci and Layout by Mendi

Here we go again, it is already the middle of the month. The best part is that it is Monday, which means our awesome Creative Team is here sharing inspiration with you. First we have an adorable mini album from Traci…
“Today is Always a Happy Day” when you get to create fun projects with Lori’s designs, and I had a lot of fun with this adorable mini album.  This album was created using Lori’s 5×5 album with box.  The pattern comes in two files, one for the box, and one for the album, and the whole project is a snap to put together.
For the base of the box, album pages, and title (which is also one of Lori’s designs and can be found here or at the Silhouette online store) I used heavy white card stock.  I wasn’t sure if it would be sturdy enough for the project, but once I layered all of the other papers and embellishments, it is very durable.
The paper is from the Here & Now collection by Echo Park and the little sun sticker is from  A Perfect Summer line.
The little birds on the branch are an SVG in Lori’s shop called Love Birds.  I chopped one of the little bird’s legs off (poor guy) so that he could sit lower on the branch.
I love how the design of this album has the ribbon/twine holes already punched for you.  I did, however,  use a 1/4″ hole punch to make them a little larger so that my thicker ribbon would slide through easily.
I will have a few more pictures posted over at Artsy Albums today, so please stop by my blog and say hello!
Thanks, and I hope your day is happy!

Next, is this beautiful layout by Mendi…
Today I turned to the Maggie Holmes collection by Crate Paper and a handful of complimentary cutting files designed by Lori.  I knew I wanted to do something fun with the 12×12 decorative tape sheet from the collection so I cut it into strips, mixing it with other paper strips and adhered them to printer paper.  I then cut my mouse ears out on my Silhouette by welding 3 basic circles together.

I took Lori’s “memories” title from a layout cutting file and paired it with one of her awesome banners which I enlarged to fit over my mouse ears and popped up with foam tape between the layers for some depth.
I also used her scalloped border which I cut twice (once from blue and another without the inside cuts from ivory).  I like to do this to minimize the visual distraction when a patterned paper is layered below my borders.  I finished off my layout with a layered tag to document the basic details of the day.

To Create my layout I used the following cutting files designed by Lori Whitlock:
Memories Layout (for title)
5 Layered Labels (Silhouette Store only)
