Unicorn Cake Stitched Layout

Hi everyone!  I’m excited to share a layout with you today that I created with Lori’s 5×7 unicorn card.  You can find the file here in Lori’s SVG shop or here in the Silhouette Design Store.  I wanted to show you how to add stitching lines to your layouts with your sketch pens.  It’s pretty simple and it adds so much detail.

I first picked out my papers and then brought the file up on my screen.  I only need the cake, stand and flowers.  I un-grouped the file and grabbed what I needed, and then regrouped the remaining pieces.  Next, I enlarged the remaining pieces to 14.75 x 18.5.

Next I set up the stitching lines for the pieces.  I started with the unicorn face, but removed the eyelashes first by releasing the compound path.  I  cut the eyelashes separately.

When I add stitching with pens to my layouts, I almost always do an internal offset of .130, then change my line style to the second stitch design that you see in that window.

It’s easier for me to cut first, leave on the mat (don’t remove the mat from the machine)  and then go back and do the pen.  You can also do cut by line color.   Once you are ready to add the lines just insert your pen and change the setting from cut to sketch, and blade to sketch pen.  Next, let your machine go to work.

This next screen shots shows the flowers, cut three sets in different colors.  This is before I removed to main flower shape.  So you can see the detail you can get with the pens.  I added sketch lines to all my pieces except the eyelashes.

Check out the detail you can get. Love it!

I used Lori’s All Girl Echo Park collection and embellishments.  I added a few punched circles for a border and vellum circles.  It’s just the sweetest layout of my little grand baby!

Resizing SVG Files in Canvas

If you’re a Brother Scan and Cut User, you may have run into issues importing SVG files that are larger than your 12 x 12 mat in Canvas.  If you receive a warning that Canvas has resized your file, you can correct the sizing so the completed project is the intended size.  I’ve started listing the correct width in my newer files, and for my older files, there is a sizing page here in my shop which will give you the correct width of the file pieces when grouped together.  Once you have the correct width, it’s simple to resize.  I’ve outlined the steps below.

  1. Start by importing the SVG file into Canvas (File, Import, locate SVG and Import)  If Canvas resizes the file, you’ll receive this message.
  2. Next select all of the pieces by clicking and dragging a box around the pieces.
  3. Once selected, right mouse click and select group.
  4. Click on the Edit button on the far-right side menu.
  5. In the menu that pops up, add the correct width in the box. Widths for my files can be found by searching the file name on this page in my shop. On my newer files the width is listed in the file itself.  Make sure that maintain aspect ratio is clicked and hit enter.  This will resize the file in a uniform manner.

  6. Once resized, you can now ungroup the pieces.  Right mouse click on the design, and select Ungroup.
  7. Before moving pieces around, make sure to re-group any score lines with their corresponding pieces.  Do this by selecting all the necessary parts, right mouse click and select group.
  8. You can now move the pieces around to cut separately.

We’ve done our best to update the sizing list in the shop, but with so many files, there may be ones without a width listed.  If you find you are unable to find a particular file, please email us at info@loriwhitlock.com and we will update the list and get the correct information to you.

Have a great day!

Lemonade Anyone?

Happy Memorial Day!  To me it always been the unofficial start to summer…  and summer makes me think of sitting on the patio or boat sipping lemonade!.  When I saw this adorable Lemonade Stand Box Card (SVG, Silhouette) I just had to make it!

This “sweet” card (pun totally intended…) is easy to assemble.  The sentiments are done using the print and cut function of your cutting machine, and if you need a little help, this general assembly tutorial for shaped box cards will get you pointed in the right direction.  It also folds flat for mailing and will fit in the free Center Box Card Envelope in Lori’s Shop.  It’s the perfect little card to send to someone to let them know you’re thinking of them!

That’s it for me today, thanks for stopping by to peek!
